C. Placed too much value on symbols of wealth
Explanation:
The conflict between the South and the North has been aging for a long time, and literature has been an active participant in the struggle of ideas. ‘Verbal battles’ were fought on the pages of books, newspapers and magazines; abolitionists fought with the apologists of slavery, romantic writers in the North glorified freedom and sympathized with blacks. In the perception of northerners (residents of New England and the central states), the South was a cruel, backward region that resisted social progress, where King Cotton ruled everything. They criticized the primitive social structure of the South, as well as the aristocratic origin of the planters, noting that only a small group are the descendants of aristocrats whose values were above monetary interests. The main part of the planters came from the middle strata: merchants, artisans, peasants, who became cotton snobs-nouveau riches, who boasted of wealth and imitated aristocrats, but who were engaged only in enrichment. Northern writers also reproached the southerners for ignorance and laziness.
