During the Cold War, the U.S. and the Soviet Union were competing for dominance. The United States maintained a close watch on the political system and interfered several times in Chilean politics to ensure the country didn't fall for communism. The same was the case of Iran, where nationalization of oil production by Prime Minister, Mohammed Mossadeq became a threat for the capitalist United States.  

One reason was alliances, the European country were all grouping some countries while distancing from the others. Two, militarism, people were building up their militaries and threatening the other countries. Three, imperialism, French and Britain had many territories and Germany wanted to expand as well. Lastly the assassination of Archduke broke the tensions.
