The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Great Britain. There a few causes for this war. Native Americans were being armed by the U.S.’s rival, mainly from weapons that were brought in from Canada . This was alarming to the United States. Another cause related to the open seas. British ships were capturing Americans and forcing them to serve on their ships, a practice called impressment . Clearly this angered the U.S. government and American citizens.
American political efforts to avoid war were not successful, thanks in large part to a group of Congressmen known as the“War Hawks” , led by Kentuckian Henry Clay . On June 18, 1812, the U.S. declared war on Britain.
In July of that year, the U.S. tried to invade the British territory of Canada to cut off enemy supply lines. This was very unsuccessful. However, the U.S. did score a surprising victory with its new and inexperienced navy , the most famous incident involving the USS Constitution, or “Old Ironsides” as it was called.
Maybe the most stunning event happened in August of 1814. British forces invaded Washington, DC and burned many of the buildings. President James Madison escaped just prior to the invasion.
But the war was not lost… but it was not really won, either. In December of 1814, the U.S. and Britain agreed to the Treaty of Ghent . This agreement ended the war and returned the colonies to their original prewar boundaries and owners. Unfortunately, there was one more bloody battle that took place before word of the peace reached them. In early 1815, U.S. forces under the command of Andrew Jackson engaged the British in the city of New Orleans . In all, nearly 400 soldiers lost their lives in a truly unnecessary battle.
