Relief was inevitably and necessarily the first response since after the economic collapse of the Great Depression millions of Americans were unemployed and/or homeless, including hundreds of thousands of farmers whose lands had been repossessed by the banks after they failed to pay their mortgages due to the Dust Bowl natural disaster. Recover meant that energetic and massive government intervention in the form of investments in infrastructure building were the only way America’s economy would recover from the economic collapse. Reform of the country’s financial and banking system, as well as labor practices were absolutely necessary to correct the systemic causes of the depression and make sure it would not re-occur.
The first 100 days of the first Roosevelt administration were the most productive in the nation’s history in terms of how many laws and reforms were accomplished. One of the best examples of recovery for the victims of the Great depression was the Public Works Administration (PWA) which launched a series of massive and ambitious programs of infrastructure building in the history of the country. It spent 7 billion of the time in the building of roads, schools, dams, bridges, hospitals, Airports that hired millions of workers, providing them with a living wage and improved the country’s overall quality of life and infrastructures that would prove crucial for the upcoming war effort.
