Prisoners peaked in 1941 at approximately 1,500,000, dropped by 1946 to 600,000, and rose steadily until 1953 to 1,750,000. The number of freed prisoners peaked in 1941 at 600,000 and again in 1953 at almost 1,000,000, but on average was between 200,000 and 400,000 per year. The average number of deaths per year until 1941 was approximately 50,000 or less, but a sharp increase to over 225,000 in began in 1941 which was followed by a gradual decline back to 50,000 or less deaths per year by 1947. Although approximately 100,000 escaped in 1934, the number of prisoners who escaped gradually declined until 1938, after which there were very few successful escapes.
