Walsh Prison in Ohio follows a system called "The Auburn System" - also called Congregate or New York System-. The Auburn System is based on the belief that inmates should be put in solitary confinement and silence should be inforced at all times.
On one hand, inmates work and eat together also following certain rules that according to this system, wil help them rehabilitate. On the other hand, inmates sleep alone in solitary confinement.
Some of the innovations this system brought were, a two-foot separation between cells, seating arrangements during meals, the striped suit and the lockstep. This system was preceded by the Pennsylvania System.
