The National Convention was elected to provide a new constitution for the country after the overthrow of the monarchy (August 10, 1792). The Convention numbered 749 deputies, including businessmen, tradesmen, and many professional men. All males 25 years and older were allowed to vote for representatives of the National Convention, regardless of their class in society. Second, the first major act of the convention was to abolish the absolute monarchy and to transform France into a republic. It succeeded the Legislative Assembly and founded the First Republic after the Insurrection of August 10, 1792.
