The statement which is best characterizes dictatorship is the leader maintains power through force. A dictator would do anything to hold power and control.
EXPLANATION:
A dictatorship is a form of government where one individual or a small group of people possesses absolute power without limitation. This term comes from the Latin word, “dictator”. A dictator usually benefits fraud and force to gain political powers. He maintains that political powers through the use of terror, intimidation, and the suppression of basic civil liberties. A dictator might also employ mass propaganda’s techniques to sustain his public support.
A dictator doesn’t share power. He wants power for himself. He wants to be the one who rules an area, including its political condition. A dictator doesn’t inherit power through birth. He does everything to gain his position as a dictator. He also isn’t blessed by the church because his power and position don’t relate with the church.
The example of the US dictator is Abraham Lincoln. During the American Civil War Lincoln exercised extraordinary powers to maintain the Union. His dictatorial actions include directly organizing the detention and arrest of dissenters, and the suspension of the right to writs of habeas corpus. However, he stayed subject to Congressional oversight, periodic elections, and judicial review.
