The Indian Removal Act was approved by president Andrew Jackson in 1830 and enforced during the presidency of Martin van Buren. It aimed to reallocate Indian tribes who lived withing the borders of the state to unsettled lands on the West of the Mississipi River.
The act of moving towards the new lands was named the Trail of Tears, as people suffered diseases, exposure and starvation during the long journey. The removal affected all the tribes mentioned (Creek, Muscogee, Cherokee, Seminole) and others. Many tribes tried to resiste the removal policty. The most outstanding case is that of the Cherokees, which were removed by force in the end, during the autumn and winter seasons 1838-1839. 4,000 Cherokees died.
