The correct answer is D. China was ready for a powerful leader after chaos at the end of the republic.
The Republic of China was founded in 1912 after the Xinhai revolution of 1911 put an end to the Qing dynasty, the last dynasty of Imperial China. During the existence of this Republic, until 1949, when it was replaced by Communist China, it lived through very convulsive years. The Nationalist Chinese party, the Kuomintang, led by Chiang Kai-Shek, held a struggle along with the Communist party against the monarchists who wanted to re-establish the Qing dynasty. Between 1916 and 1927, China was fragmented and submerged in the chaos of a civil war, until Chiang Kai-Shek succeeded in establishing a central government in Nankin. After this moment, he became a powerful leader and faced a new enemy: the Communist party. During the next period, his government would fight against the Communists and against the Japanese during WWII. Chiang Kai-Shek's government was overthrown in 1949 and replaced by a Communist government led by Mao Zedong.
