On June 5, 1966, JAMES MEREDITH was shot in an ambush as he attempted to finish a peaceful march from Memphis, Tennessee, to Jackson, Mississippi. Meredith made national headlines in 1962 by becoming the first African-American to enroll at the University of Mississippi. Civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., CORE's FLOYD MCKISSICK, and SNCC's Stokely Carmichael rushed to Meredith's hospital bed. They decided that the parade should be finished. As Carmichael and McKissick walked through Mississippi, they observed that little had changed despite federal laws. Local townspeople harassed demonstrators while police turned a blind eye or arrested activists for being troublemakers.
