David Glasgow Farragut was an American military man. From a young age he joined the army. During the Civil War, he was a senior officer of the United States Navy and later was Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral and Admiral.
Although he lived in Norfolk, Virginia before the start of the Civil War, Farragut made it clear to everyone who knew him that he considered secession as treason. Just before the outbreak of the war, Farragut moved with his wife (originally from Virginia) to Hastings-on-Hudson, a small town just outside of New York City. He offered his services to the Union, and initially was given a seat was initially given a seat on the Board of Naval Retirement.
