More than 20,000 people joined the final march to Montgomery to show their support.
Explanation:
The Selma to Montgomery marches were three protest marches during 1965. The people who marched were nonviolent activists looking to demonstrate the desire of African-Americans citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
During the first march, the unarmed activists were attacked by the State and county troops after they passed over the county line, this event was known as the Bloody Sunday.
The second march was two days after the first one and had the same result. When the marchers passed over the county line they faced the violence of the troops. On the night of that day a group of white people murdered James Reeb, an activist and Unitarian Universalist from Boston who was there to support the second march.
After the events of the first and second march, the group demanded to be protected and the president Lyndon Johnson offered them 1,900 members of the National Guard and several FBI agents to that purpose. He did this after the refusal of the Alabama governor´s Geroge Wallace to do the same. The march took 4 days and there were about 25,000 people when they entered Montgomery.
