Silk is what caused the economy in China to prosper. Since it wasn't available in the west, everyone wanted it because it was rare. Also, what did Christopher Columbus originally sail for. It was a shorter route to Asia so silk and other goods could be transported fast. I guess you could even say because of silk America was formed:)
