During the war, John proposed the idea of creating a battalion of black soldiers, and in return for their service, he proposed providing the slaves with freedom. Lawrence' beliefs that in fact there are no differences between white and black people, differentiated him from other leaders in South Carolina. At the beginning of 1778, Lawrence suggested his father, who was then president of the Continental Congress, to use the forty slaves he was going to inherit as part of the squad. Henry Lawrence granted the request, but with reservations that delayed the project.
