Why was it important that the border state, Maryland, remained in the union?
A) Maryland was one of the largest and populated states in the nation.
B) Most US generals were from the state of Maryland and losing that state would hurt the US military.
C) Maryland leaving the Union would mean that Washington D.C. would be surrounded by Confederate territory.
D) If Maryland would have joined the Confederate States then states such as West Virginia and New York would have as well.
