During the XVIII century, lots of important industrial areas in Britain and the US didn’t have any water links and were isolated from the commercial activity. You basically had transport problems if you weren’t near water. The solution was to be found in canals, a man-made route in which you could direct the route. It was expensive to concrete it but once it was done it was a good way of making large profits. Canals allowed a bigger volume of goods to move, and opening up new markets in terms of location and affordability.
