there are (at least) a couple of ways to look at this. one can work with the whole space, subract the width of the picture, then divide the result by 2. since the picture is about 2 feet wide, there will be about 8-2=6 feet of space that will be evenly divided on each side of the picture. that is, the picture will be about 3 feet from the edge of the wall.
