A. If the submarine is 185 m below sea, and the helicopter is 155 m above, I can add the two numbers to figure how far apart they are. 185+155= 340. The submarine and the helicopter are 340 metres apart in vertical distance.

B. If the divers are 162 metres above the sub, which is 185 metres below, I can subtract 162 from 185 to figure out what the difference is. 185-162= 23. The divers are 23 metres below sea level.

C. If the divers are 23 m below sea level, and the birds are 80 m below the helicopter, which is at 155 m, there are two things I have to do to get the answer. First, I subtract 80 from 155 to find out how high the birds are above sea level. 155-80= 75. The birds are 75 m above sea level. 

Then, like part A, I add 23 and 75 together to find out the total distance between the birds and divers. 23+75= 98. The birds and divers are 98 metres apart.

D. I assume this question is asking if the submarine or the birds are closer to the divers.
The submarine is 162 m from the divers and the birds are 98 m above. Because 162 is larger than 98, the birds are a closer distance. To figure out how much, subtract 98 from 162. 162-98= 64. The birds are closer to the divers by 64 metres.

E. This question is similar to D. The helicopter is 155+23 m above the divers (155+23 is 178) and the submarine is 162 metres. This time, the submarine is closer. Again, I can find out how much by subtracting 162 from 178. 178-162= 16. The submarine is closer to the divers by 16 m.

F. For me, the easiest way to do this question is to find out how far from sea level each object is, then order it.
Helicopter= 155 m above
Birds= 155m-80m = 75 m above.
Divers= 23 m below
Sub= 185 m below
