The normal brain has a limited content of cerebrospinal fluid and can only take up a little more quantity before the intracranial pressure begin to increase. Intracranial pressure may increase due to traumatic brain injury leading to swelling of the brain called cerebral edema.
Mannitol is a sugar alcohol found naturally in fruits and vegetables. It is an osmotic diuretic. An osmotic diuretic prevents the reuptake of water and sodium.
Mannitol used this mechanism in the reduction of increased intracranial pressure following cerebral edema.
A dosage of 0.25-1g/kg intravenously is given initially followed by a maintenance dose of 0.25-0.5g/kg intravenously every 4-6 hours.
