Gymnosperms and angiosperms are highly evolved terrestrial plants. The gymnosperms are plants which have naked seeds whereas, angiosperm includes flowering plants with enclosed seeds. The following are common characteristics among gymnosperms and angiosperms:
Sporophytic and gematophytic generations: Both exhibit hetromorphic alternation of generations in which the sporophyte is diploid, dominant, autotrophic and independent generation whereas, gametophyte is recessive, haploid and dependent generation.
Sperm cells travel through tube to reach ovule: Both exhibit a pollen tube for carrying the male gamete to the female gamete and facilitates the fertilization.
Fertilization of egg cell with sperm cell produces zygote: Males and female gametes are fertilized to form gametes in both gymnosperms and angiosperms.
