You plan to concentrate an E. coli cell suspension by centrifugation prior to cell disruption by using a centrifuge of 0.127 m diameter and length 1 m. The cells are suspended in liquid with density of 1 g/cm^3 and viscosity of 2 cP and the cell has the following physical properties. a) If the liquid film thickness (R_0-R_1) is 0.0381 m, predict the flow rate for the proposed operation. Assume that the centrifuge will be operated at 16,000 RPM and that it will deliver 90% of the theoretical capacity. b) After disruption, the diameter of the cell debris has been reduced to an average of 0.5 mu m and the viscosity of the suspension has been increased to 8 cP. Estimate the new feed rate of the centrifuge for this operation. Assume that the centrifuge operates at the same speed and efficiency.
