A voltage difference is applied between the wire and the box so that an electric field is created between the wire and the box's shell. When a radiation particle travels through the gas in the box, it ionizes the originally electrically neutral gas. Therefore, for a short period of time there exists an electrical current while newly produced ions and electrons travel towards correspondingly charged conductors. The electrical current is registered: the higher the current, the more radiation there is in the area.
