The length of metal H will increase more than the length of metal G.
The given problem is based on the concept of thermal expansion. When a certain metal is heated, its length increases according to the thermal expansion equation,
Here, and are the change in length and change in temperature respectively and L is the original length. And is the thermal expansion coefficient.
Therefore, we see that the larger the coefficient of linear expansion, the more the metal length increases.
Here we have two metals, G on the top of the strip and H on the bottom, and the coefficient of thermal expansion for metal G is less than that of metal H. So this means that as the strip is heated, the length of metal H (on the bottom) will increase more than the length of metal G (on top): and therefore, the strip will bend towards the top (with metal G in the inside of the curve, while metal H on the outside).
Thus, we can conclude that the length of metal H will increase more than the length of metal G.
