The relationship between urbanization and development is a vital policy concern. It has been established that rate of urbanization is a key indicator of development. In that, a higher rate of urbanization implies a greater level of development. This is very evident in most developed countries (MDCs)and their levels of development justify this ideology. Most MDCs have a rate of urbanization above 70%. But is this case the same in Sub-Saharan Africa?
Urbanization is a process by which an increasing number of people become permanently concentrated in relatively small areas forming cities. It extends a longer way to involve rural-urban drift where people are either ‘pushed’ or ‘pulled’ from rural areas to urban areas. Urbanization has been known to create enormous social, economic and environmental changes. This phenomenon just like a coin has two faces. Urbanization helps in creation of job opportunities, improved transportation and communication among others. This is not the case in Sub-Saharan Africa where urbanization has been highly unmanaged. Sub-Saharan Africa has been noted for a faster rate of urbanization but this rate is rather causing more problems than improving the quality of life.
