Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr. was an American politician from Georgia, a member of the Democratic Party, and elected in 1973 at the age of 35 as the first black mayor of Atlanta, Georgia and of any major city in the South. 3. Martin Luther King Jr, was born in Atlanta on January 15, 1929. In, 1964, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. 4. John Robert Lewis was born on February 21, 1940 in Troy Alabama. He is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district, serving since January 3, 1987, and is the dean of the Georgia congressional delegation. 5. Lester Garfield Maddox Sr, was an American politician who served as the 75th Governor of Georgia from 1967 to 1971, came to prominence as a segregationist when he refused to serve black customers in his Atlanta restaurant, in defiance of the Civil Rights Act. Maddox died on June 25, 2003 in Atlanta.
