Sacco and Vanzetti were Italian radical anarchists who migrated to America. They were convicted for a murder under dubious circumstances, and their release was appealed several times to the supreme court. However they were executed, reportedly on the grounds that their anarchist ideals led them to commit the murders. In the US there was a strong bias against radicalism, and just saying  that you were anarchist, or against the government, was deemed suspicious.
