The most important reasons why World War I began are:
1. Nationalist movements were on the rise
There was a growing sentiment of nationalism in Europe during the decades before the outbreak of World War I. All the big nations in Europe were convinced that they were superior towards the others and they would not hesitate to prove this.
2. Competition to colonize smaller countries rose
As more and more countries in Africa were colonized (especially after the Congress of Berlin in 1884), competition rose to colonize the countries that were left. Colonies were important for their natural resources and markets.
3. Countries were engaging in militarism.
European countries invested more and more in the military. Standing armies became bigger and there were bigger investments in the armory and the development of firearms. Al major nations in Europe were prepared for a large-scale military conflict.
4. Countries were splitting into alliances
Prior to World War I, Europe was divided into 2 big alliances. The Triple Entente consisted of France, Great Britain, and Russia. The Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. With the outbreak of the war, almost all major countries in Europe were immediately involved, which escalated the war really fast.
Reasons why World War I did not begin:
1. Countries were developing poison gas
This was a consequence of the war. All major nations were looking for bigger and more efficient weapons during the war. This industrialization of warfare leads to the development of poison gas.
2. Smaller countries rose up to fight imperialism.
Prior to and during World War I, decolonization and anti-imperialism were not a big issue. On the contrary, troops and soldiers from the colonies were ordered to fight in Europe for the mainlands.

Following are remarkable of the principal long-term situations that are recognized by historians:-
Alliances/rivalry between the before 1914The BalkansNational governmental formation. In all of the Great powers, armed spending developed exceedingly in the years preceding to the war. All but Britain had an induction. Over 85% of men of armed age in France and 50% in Germany had toiled in the army or navy. France had the largest proportion of its people in the army.
Allied to this increasing militarism was an extreme nationalism in most of the Great powers. The hope for world power situation was very prevalent in Germany. The French want for vengeance over Alsace and Lorraine was quite powerful. In Britain Imperialism and maintenance for the Empire was pretty obvious. This nationalism indicated that there was limited opposition to the war in these nations. Several greeted what they believed would be a brief, triumphant battle.
