Right now India has more honors students than Iowa has students in total. The National Basketball Association has over 100 players from different countries for only 500 jobs. We see this global competitiveness not just in sports, but in all areas. The world is more interconnected and interdependent and students need to be globally competent to succeed.
This means that students need the awareness, skills and knowledge to understand, navigate and flourish in this increasingly global economy. However, we continue to hear that while students may be academically prepared, they are not emotionally ready for the workforce. To be college and career ready, students need to be prepared both academically, as well as behaviorally. This includes what we often refer to as “soft skills,” such as problem solving, adaptability, work ethic, and the ability to communicate in a business setting.
