Son ciclos o circuitos en los que los elementos químicos, necesarios para la vida, circulan entre seres vivos del mundo biótico, y seres no vivos del mundo abiótico.
"Bio-" hace referencia a seres vivos,
"-geo-" hace referencia a la tierra,
"-químico" hace referencia a los elementos químicos.
Existen muchos de estos elementos, pero entre los mas importantes encontramos al agua, al oxígeno, al nitrógeno, al carbono, al fósforo, y al azufre, entre otros.
Todos ellos forman parte de los componentes mas importantes para la supervivencia de los seres vivos, y la importancia de su circulación y reciclado radica en la supervivencia.
