Wind erosion is a process in which surface materials such as rocks, soil and other earth particles are removed from the earth surface and transported from one location to another by the action of wind. Wind erosion usually occurs in flat, dry and sandy areas. Wind erosion can destroy natural vegetation and land by causing soil loss, soil structure damage, and air pollution.

The term erosion refers to the removal of the upper layer of soil. Wind erosion is the damage of the soil due to the contact of wind with upper layer of the soil. The material such as of soil particles are removed action of wind causing soil loss, air pollution, soil structure loss etc. When the wind blows around an area with loosely bound soil, the upper layer of the soil gets lifted up and remove by the wind. This process is known as wind erosion.
Wind erosion may lead to degradation of crops which might lead to food loss. Wind erosion may also lead to infertility soil which in turn damages the growth of plants. The major reason for wind erosion is drying out of soil and deforestation. The three types of movement of soil during a wind erosion are suspension, creep and saltation.
Suspension type of movement occurs when the wind takes away the dust particles into the area which is very far away from the actual area of origin. Creep type of movement of soil occurs when the soil particles roll over an area and meet. Saltation type of movement of soil is the primary soil movement. This moment damages the soil surface as well as the vegetation of the area.
