Biological processes involve both the breaking down of high-energy molecules into simple molecules, known as catabolism, and the building of complex molecules from simple ones, known as anabolism. In general, catabolic processes generate energy, and anabolic processes require energy. The energy is usually stored in intermediate-energy-carrying molecules such as adenosine triphosphate, which can diffuse or be transported to the place where the energy is needed and deliver chemical energy from the breaking of its phosphate bond.
