At some point, disease was believed to be from "bad blood", and the "cure" was to let the patient "bleed it out". Needless to say, this did little help, and id anything it just made the people feel sicker or weaker. Once disease was connected to germs, which are tiny LIVING things, doctors started into looking how to kill them using antibiotics, or how vitamins could help your body fight them off. During the Civil War, a lot of soldiers died from infections. This was because surgeons didn't understand how pathogens (germs) were spread from person to person. They didn't clean utensils after operating, and this caused disease to spread like wild fire.
