The effects of anaerobic respiration in the muscles of mammals are not permanent.
Recall that during anaerobic respiration, lactic acid builds up in the muscles of mammals when oxygen becomes inadequate for aerobic respiration. The lactic acid accumulates as a result of the conversion of pyruvate molecules generated by glycolysis to lactic acid.
Pyruvate molecules from glycolysis are converted to lactic acid accompanied by small ATP generation because there is no oxygen for the pyruvates to move to Kreb's cycle.
However, the conversion of pyruvate molecules to lactic acid is a reversible process. Once oxygen becomes available, the lactic acid is converted back to pyruvates which then enter the Kreb's cycle under normal aerobic conditions.
