In an ecosystem, organisms obtain energy by feeding on one another in a series of steps called FOOD CHAIN. This food chain begins with a set of organism called PRODUCERS, which possess the ability to absorb light energy from SUNLIGHT in order to begin the process.

However, organisms called CONSUMERS starts to feed on one another to obtain this energy, starting from the producer. According to the attached diagram, consumers include; HERBIVORES (feed directly on the producers/plants), CARNIVORES (feed on herbivores and other carnivores), OMNIVORES (feed on both plants and other animals), DECOMPOSERS (feed on dead plant and animal matter).

In a nutshell, organisms in the examples are called CONSUMERS because they feed on other organisms in an heterotrophic mode of nutrition.

Carbon as a substance has the ability to form more compounds than other elements. It is abundant in both living and non-living cells.

Carbon has greatly increased in the atmosphere due to the activity of men such as burning of fossil fuels, waste of some companies releasing carbon, felling of trees.

It leads to formation of chlorofloro carbon that causes green house gases that deplete our ozone layer and causes global warming. Ozone layer is a layer in the atmosphere that helps reduce the intensity of light by absorbing some radiation that comes directly from sunlight. Depletion of ozone layer has result due to abundance of green houses gases form from carbon.
