Protein domains are often found to be involved in specific protein-protein interactions, and so in theory protein domain shuffling could increase the complexity of protein interaction networks. However, in most cases, the old pathway would need to continue to function (to maintain species survival during the evolution of these new interactions). Consider whether alternative splicing could facilitate this process. If so, which specific type(s) of alternative splicing would be the most relevant?
