Esta tecnología ha llevado esperanza para el tratamiento de enfermedades genéticas hereditarias a través de la restauración de la función génica. Sin embargo, la técnica CRISPR-Cas de edición genómica ha sido recientemente utilizada para desarrollar bebés editados genéticamente, aún cuando los efectos secundarios que dicha tecnología no han sido completamente resueltos (efectos de edición genómica en regiones genómicas no deseadas), con lo cual llevando un serio riesgo para los bebés que han sido modificados genéticamente.
