We use the decibel scale to quantify amplitude because:

a. the dynamic range of human hearing is so large that without decibels, calculations would be cumbersome and prone to error

b. in the US anyway, it is required by ANSI

c. there is only one decibel scale so it makes “decibel exchanges” easy to accomplish

d. decibel behavior is predicted by simple harmonic motion
