Some characteristics would be Low biotic diversity, Simple vegetation structure, Energy and nutrients in the form of dead organic material, and Limitation of drainage.

Waxy coating is to prevent xerophytic plants (plants growing in arid conditions), from losing water. In case of absence of waxy coating, water will evaporate from the stomata, and plants will be dehydrated. Wxy coating is the preventive mechansim of xerophytes.
