Explanation:
In an ecosystem, organisms feed on one another to get energy needed for their cellular functions. This energy called biomass, is transferred when one organism feeds on another. However, only about 10% of biomass is transferred to the organism in the next trophic level because some of these are lost when organisms perform their metabolic activities.
In other words, the BIOMASS decreases with increasing trophic level. According to the pyramid of biomass, biomass in each trophic level is always less than the below trophic level because the organism at the below trophic level lost most of the biomass (about 90%) before transferring to the one above.
