Different genetic mutations cause many forms of cancer.
Somatic mutations can be acquired during life, but cannot be inherited from parents. Germ cell mutations can be inherited from parents or acquired during life.
Genetic mutations that cause diseases are not always passed on to offspring. For example, it could be a somatic mutation (soma = body, other than reproductive cells), and this would not be the genetic material passed on in the sperm or ova. Also, by chance the child may receive the non-mutated allele from the parent. Or in the case of X linked diseases, perhaps the father has an X linked recessive disease, but will not pass his X chromosome to his son, he will pass his Y chromosome, etc.
