Why are scientific theories useful?

Scientific theories are useful because they help explain phenomena in the natural world that we previously had no or an incorrect understanding of. They are also useful because they are provisional, and so they change and develop as we gain more knowledge.

In 1665, Robert Hooke observed a piece of cork under his microscope.

Cork is made of the bark of a tree, which means that the cell he found was a plant cell, therefore an eukaryotic cell.
