Why is the process of copying dna called semiconservative replication? each strand is a mixture of old and new nucleotides. one strand runs from 5’ to 3’ and the other runs from 3’ to 5’. the process happens very slowly to conserve energy. the two new dna molecules are formed from one old strand and one new strand of dna.
