Excess hydrochloric acid is added to the bottle causing an exothermic chemical reaction generating hydrogen gas. As the reaction proceeds, the gas travels through the tubing to an inverted bottle filled with water, displacing the air as the hydrogen gas is collected. Mg(s)+2HCl(g)=MgCl2(s)+H2(g)
