Es un hidruro del grupo 14 y el alcano más simple, y es el componente principal del gas natural. La relativa abundancia de metano en la Tierra lo convierte en un combustible económicamente atractivo, aunque capturarlo y almacenarlo plantea desafíos técnicos debido a su estado gaseoso en condiciones normales de temperatura y presión.
El metano de origen natural se encuentra tanto bajo tierra como bajo el fondo marino, y se forma mediante procesos geológicos y biológicos. El depósito más grande de metano se encuentra debajo del lecho marino en forma de clatratos de metano. Cuando el metano alcanza la superficie y la atmósfera, se lo conoce como metano atmosférico.
