The lines above were taken from the very first chapter of "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka. Those are the thoughts of Gregor Samsa, the main character, who leads a mediocre life working at a job he hates. When he says he is holding back for his parents' sake, Gregor is reflecting on how he wishes he could quit his job but won't because he is helping his family with their debt. Gregor wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a bug, a metaphor for the way we are seen and treated by society. Gregor represents the human life that has lost importance in the face of unfulfilled dreams and average jobs.
