Black Hawkthe Sac people and the Fox people were forced west in 1823. They sufferedfrom hunger in their new less-fertile lands. Desperate to survive they tried to return to their old lands to grow more food. White settlers shot Black Hawk'saide. Black Hawk not surprisingly began what is now known as the BlackHawk War.
