A restrictive phrase is necessary to the meaning of a sentence
Explanation:
A phrase is a group of related words standing together as a single unit that needs to be part of a sentence or a clause to mean something. There are several types of phrases, such as noun phrases, gerund phrases, participial phrase, among others. Now, these phrases can be a restrictive phrase or nonrestrictive. A restrictive phrase is necessary to the meaning of a sentence, that is to say, without it the sentence would be incomplete.
In the examples below, the meanings of the sentence would be incomplete without the prepositional phrases (underlined and in bold), therefore they are restrictive.
He was between a rock and a hard place.
The book was on the table.
