An event that is significantly similar to the book To Kill a Mockingbird is the OJ Simpson trial.
Explanation:
One reason the two events are similar is the issue of race. Simpson was a black man accused of killing his white wife. Although stardom was an issue, since Simpson was a famous football player, race was also a hotly contested issue during the trial. Some people were angry that Simpson was acquitted. This is similar to the Tom Robinson trial because race was also more of an issue than it should have been. The trial lasted nine months and the state of California rendered him not guilty. Many people throughout the country were shocked by the decision. This situation is similar to the Tom Robinson trial in that it captured everyone’s interest, and everyone had a strong opinion. Everyone in Maycomb was interested in and had an opinion about the Tom Robinson trial. Everyone in America seemed to be interested in OJ Simpson’s trial. It was televised and involved forensics, so people were highly interested. Another reason the two events are similar is that there were evidentiary issues in each case.If her right eye was blacked and she was beaten mostly on the right side of the face, it would tend to show that a left-handed person did it. In each case, there was an issue of whether the evidence was really taken into consideration by the jury. In Simpson’s case, some people thought that the jury got fatigued or confused. Moreover, the complicated and confusing testimony from the DNA experts may have confused and worn out the jury, who may not have had an appropriate understanding of the methodologies and scientific merit of these forensic tests.
