The flag fell from the broken staff.
Explanation:
Barbara was flying the flag in her house to show loyalty to the Union after all the United States flags had been removed from the town after the arrival of Confederacy troops. When the Confederate troops saw the flag flying, they open fire and destroyed the mast.
With nothing to support it, the flag fell. It was in that moment that Barbara snatched up the damaged flag and flew it out her window manually in a sign of defiance. The Confederate general respected her bravery and heart and Barbara continued flying the Union flag.
